How and why to build your personal brand

There's a lot of talk about the importance of working on your personal brand these days. But we don't all have aspirations to be 'influencers', so does it really matter if we have a brand or not? Actually, it sort of does, and not for the reasons you might think.

While the idea of creating a personal brand might sound like a lot of self-aggrandising social media twaddle, in reality it can be pretty helpful in clarifying who you are and what you stand for in the context of your career. And the more authentic your brand is, the more likely it is that you're doing the things you really love.

LISTEN: Unfurling

Sometimes it's important to take a step back and realise that the ups and downs of work need to be viewed in a wider context, a much wider context... And that's where Unfurling comes in, harnessing science and nature to help explore some of the biggest challenges the world is facing right now - as well as helping us to learn and reflect more. The pod blends diverse perspectives on major geopolitical issues such as climate change and economic shifts, with more personal issues such as attitudes to work, health, beauty and confidence; and reminds us that we are all part of something much bigger.

PLAY: Wordle

Yep, it's the internet craze du jour, but there's a reason the word-based guessing game is dominating headlines and Twitter feeds. The simplicity and wholesomeness of the lovingly created online puzzle is key to its current appeal. It's the moment of calm, universality and connectivity that we all need right now as work and life stresses continue to dominate. Yeah, the internet will probably move on in a hot minute, but for now let's rejoice in those 30 squares.

5 questions about work to ask yourself right now

Sometimes taking a minute or two to ask yourself a question about your career can help you feel differently about work. So we'll be offering up a few suggestions in each Voco newsletter as food for career thought...

  • Think of five jobs you'd love to do. Does anything connect them?
  • Would you rather lead a team or belong to one?
  • What one word best describes what success feels like to you?
  • If someone gave you a $10million to start a business, what would you do?
  • Does it matter more to you what you do or who you do it with?
